When Howard Spooner first visited the pub in Manton he was told he couldn’t bring his dog inside. In that moment, he resolved to return and buy it one day.
After a 100 to 1 bet came home, Howard and local racehorse trainer Guy Sangster bought the pub together. Since then, champion jockey AP McCoy has joined them as the third owner.
It’s not surprising that there are close ties with the horse racing community. The walls are filled with photos of famous racehorse winners and the pub is popular with trainers, owners and jockeys. There is always an outside chance you’ll overhear a “hot tip”.
The restaurant serves delicious, hearty, fresh, food. The meat is locally sourced and the menu follows the seasons plus some regular favourites, such as the OC burger: a stack of meats, homemade relish, applewood cheddar, bacon and lettuce. Only a few have managed to pick it up and eat it!
There are great walks nearby including one out from Marlborough along the river to the Outside Chance, where there is now always a warm welcome for locals, visitors and their dogs!
With my core business being based in London, It is wonderful to come home to these beautiful surroundings and have a pint of 6x at the OC.
