Avebury is an extraordinary place. A beautiful village, run by the National Trust, inside a neolithic stone circle. Unlike Stonehenge the stones are accessible to the public all year round. Avebury also has an interesting 16th century Manor house the renovation of which was featured on the BBC in a programme called The Manor Reborn. The people who work there are very well informed and encourage you to open all the drawers and doors and try on the various period costumes supplied, it's a lot of fun. The well-tended walled garden is also a delight.
The Three Tuns, Great Bedwyn recommends
The Kennet and Avon canal runs through the bottom of Great Bedwyn and adds a really interesting dynamic to the life of the village. A number of people live permanently on the barges that are moored here while others are just passing through on holiday. There is a little path that follows the canal along which is one of our favourite places to spend time with the kids, watching the locks in action, seeing the ducks and wildlife and swimming in the adjacent river.
Wiltshire Wildlife Trust recommends
Whether it’s taking time out in one of the reserve’s bird hides to watch over the lakes or to walk the perimeter path and take in the views of the wetland and garden birds.
