The idea of an annual food festival in Urchfont came about when the local community group were brainstorming ideas to benefit their lovely village in 2012. There had been a food festival there some years before, so it seemed only right to re-establish it.
In a team, led by local resident Jenny Holt, Taste Wiltshire launched with the aim of showcasing the best food and drink in Wiltshire while creating an affordable day out. The first festival saw 20 Wiltshire producers & a cooking demonstration from Masterchef champion Natalie Coleman. Growing annually the festival now has around 35 producers with a wide range of produce from goat meat through to ice cream and craft beer.
Set around the picturesque village with background music it’s a lovely way to while away a day. Wander around, sample, buy local food and drink and meet producers. Watch a cooking demonstration from a Masterchef contestant or local Michelin starred chef. Buy some street food for lunch – try Burmese, Indian or Turkish cuisine.
‘The festival is on the same Sunday every year in September and it’s a fun and festive atmosphere with both producers and visitors returning year after year. There’s no need to wait until you get home to dig into the culinary delights. There are hay bales for sitting on and tables and chairs so sit back, relax, eat and enjoy’.
There as so many amazing producers in Wiltshire. Taste Wiltshire was born out of an idea to promote our community further afield - and I had started a farmers markets in Devizes so I had a bit of a head start. The producers love having another venue to promote their wares and we love them because they are so passionate!
