After a long career at Soho House, Chippy Day craved a better life in the country so bought the George and Dragon in Rowde in 2004. A 14th Century building, with many original features, it was the perfect place to create a relaxed pub with great service and understated touches.
‘Rowde is a lovely village - ever since we opened we’ve been welcomed and supported by the locals. Our leafy walled garden is a great venue for summer bbqs and bonfire nights and we often hold quiz nights or wine and cheese evenings.’
Seafood is their specialty with daily deliveries from Cornwall. Signature dishes include Cornish lobster with garlic butter and oysters, but there’s plenty on the a la carte menu - their cheese soufflé being particularly popular. The bar is well stocked with an ever changing selection of local craft beers, and their bespoke catering service and party room means they can hold parties or weddings at the pub or come to you.
Their 3 bedrooms are especially welcoming – rustic luxury with higgledy piggledly floors, exposed oak beams and modern comforts, with breakfast served in the pub in front of the old fireplace.
Dogs are welcome for a drink or to stay and Caen Hill Locks is in walking distance. Hot water bottles hang off a door for punters to take to keep warm outside, while B&B guests can choose from a selection of DVDs. This place is a gem.
