Ashley Sandy learnt to Nordic walk when living in Switzerland in 2006, and has always been interested in improving her own health. The joy of exercising while walking through beautiful countryside has remained with her, so in 2015 she decided to qualify as a Nordic walking instructor.
‘I love Nordic Walking – you get great exercise, while exploring new places & views, and loads of fresh air. Nordic walking makes you stand tall, you use more muscles and have better posture. Add a gorgeous view to that and you feel like you’re on top of the world.’
Living near Marlborough, Ashley runs her Nordic Walking classes at some fabulous locations including the Marlborough Downs & Pewsey Vale. It’s a low impact cardiovascular exercise that by adding poles uses 90% of the muscles in your body. It’s fabulous for general fitness & can help people with high blood pressure, stress or those recovering from injuries.
‘Nordic walking is great fun as it’s so sociable. Beginners can start with a taster session to see if it appeals and after that they can do 4 x 1 hour lessons spread over four weeks. This helps you build up the techniques and your fitness and at £35 is a steal.’
Once you’ve learnt how it’s done you can join Ashley for her more easy going walks, workout walks with intervals and drills or adventure walks to discover new parts of Wiltshire.
I’ve lived in Wiltshire for nearly 20 years (apart from my stint in Switzerland) and love the laidback friendly people, the great countryside and the quirky shops and businesses that you find out and about. I spend a lot of time in Marlborough and love it’s independent shops, good coffee shops, eateries and pubs. It has a fun vibe especially in the summer with the summer school and the jazz festival. My job takes me all over the area and I specially love the mystical aspects of the areas such as the standing stones at Avebury and the fabulous white horses on the hills.
Walks are held throughout the week - Monday to Sunday. Please see website for more information
SKI FIT CLASSES
Thursday mornings from 9.00am to 10.00am at Postern Hill, Savernake Forest. Starting 4th January for 6 weeks
I love Avebury all year round but thee is something really special about an evening walk in the early summer when the sun is setting and bathing the stones in a goergous pink light. Nice to follow that with a glass of something cold at the Red Lion Inn in the village. You might even see a druid wedding!
Sound Knowledge is a great little independent record shop in Marlborugh and Roger is always there to help you find what you need or give you recommendations on new music. They also feature new and up and coming bands and local artists and often have small gigs and signings. James Odell, McFly and Scouting for Girls to name a few names plus lots more new and exciting music.
On a mission to find the best flat white in Wiltshire you would do no better than the fabulous café at Honeystreet on the Kennet and Avon canal. Also serves really good food and amazing cakes they have a small café and also a really lovely garden on side of the canal. I have spend many an hour after a good walk up the Alton Barnes white horse enjoying a coffee in this fabulous litte gem!
